UNDERSTANDING THE EXPERIENCE

What is anxiety?

Anxiety is more than worry. It's the persistent sense that something is wrong — even when you can't name what — and the exhausting effort of managing that feeling day after day. For many people it becomes a background hum that colours everything: work, relationships, sleep, and the ability to feel present in your own life.

Depression often arrives alongside anxiety, or quietly on its own like a heaviness, a flatness, a disconnection from things that used to matter. Together they can make even small things feel impossible.

Signs you might be experiencing anxiety or depression

  • Persistent worry that feels impossible to switch off

  • Low mood, flatness, or loss of pleasure in things you used to enjoy

  • Difficulty sleeping, or sleeping far too much

  • Physical symptoms: tension, fatigue, chest tightness

  • Avoiding people, situations, or decisions

  • A sense that you're watching your life from the outside

MY APPROACH

How I work with anxiety and depression

I work with anxiety and depression through a Narrative Therapy lens — exploring the stories we tell ourselves about danger, capability, and what we deserve to feel. So much of what drives anxiety is an inherited story, not a fixed truth. Together we look at where those stories came from, how they've served you, and how they might be rewritten.

Sessions move at your pace. There's no pressure to disclose more than feels right, and no single technique applied to everyone. Depending on what emerges, I also draw on Mindfulness practices and Depth Work — paying attention to what the body holds and what lives beneath conscious awareness.

Narrative Therapy

Examining the stories that shape your sense of self — and exploring what it means to author new ones.

Mindfulness

Bringing awareness to present-moment experience — not to transcend difficulty, but to meet it with steadiness.

Depth Work

Exploring what lives beneath the surface — the patterns and longings that quietly shape how we move through the world.

WHO I WORK WITH

You might be looking for this support if…

You're high-functioning on the outside, holding down a career, maintaining relationships, but inside you haven't felt like yourself in years. The gap between how you appear and how you feel is exhausting

“

You've tried managing it alone. You've read the books, downloaded the apps, told yourself to think positively. It helps for a while and then it doesn't. You're ready to try something different.

“

Something has shifted, a loss, a transition, a relationship ending and the anxiety or low mood that followed has stayed longer than it should have. You're not sure if what you're feeling is "normal" or something worth paying attention to.

THE PROCESS

What to expect from anxiety therapy at Grounded Practice

The First Session

Your first appointment is a conversation, not an assessment. We'll talk about what's brought you in, what you've already tried, and what you're hoping for. You don't need to have a clear answer to any of those — arriving is enough.

Ongoing Work

Most clients meet weekly or every two weeks. There's no set number of sessions — some people find significant relief in 8–12 sessions; others work over a longer arc. We'll check in regularly about how it's going and adjust as needed.

In-person sessions are available in Vancouver, BC. Online therapy is available across British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Newfoundland, Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut via secure video.

FAQs

Common Questions About Therapy for Anxiety

Can therapy really help with anxiety and depression?

1

Yes, and the evidence for talking therapy is substantial. Narrative Therapy and mindfulness-based approaches in particular have strong research support for anxiety and depression. What matters most, though, is the fit between you and your therapist — and that's exactly what the free consultation is for

How do I know if what I'm feeling is anxiety or depression?

2

The two often overlap, and many people experience both at once. You don't need a diagnosis to begin therapy — in fact, one of the things we do in early sessions is simply understand what's happening for you, without rushing to label it.

Is anxiety therapy covered by insurance in BC?

3

Sessions with a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) are covered by many extended health plans in British Columbia. Coverage varies by provider and plan — check your benefits under "Registered Clinical Counsellor" or "psychotherapy." I can provide receipts for direct reimbursement.

What if I've tried therapy before and it didn't help?

4

That's worth talking about. Therapy not working often has more to do with fit, timing, or approach than with whether therapy itself can help. I'm happy to hear what's been tried before and how we might do something different.
